Understanding the connection between domestic violence and animal cruelty is important in order to ensure the safety of both humans and animals living with violence.

Victims of abuse stay silent about the violence due to tactics abusers use to maintain power and control over their partner. The tactic of threatening or harming a family pet to intimidate is a BIG RED FLAG that YOU ARE IN DANGER! Do not underestimate this person. When safe to do so, call the 24/7 crisis hotline and create a safety plan for you, your children, and your pets.
Tips for Victims with Pets

Call the FavorHouse Crisis Hotline to create a safety plan that includes your pets.

Your partner may attempt to get control of your pet in order to intimidate you. An animal license, vaccine record, or vet receipt in your name will help prove you own your pet.

If possible and safe to do so, collect vaccination records, pet license, and medications to keep in a safe place where you can access them when needed.

Ask for help from animal care and control officers or law enforcement if pets need to be retrieved from the abuser. Never reclaim animals alone.
